When it comes to home security cameras, few devices rival the Wyze Cam v2. The small, cubical camera looks like it hopped right out of a Pixar movie—but don’t be fooled by its appearance—this little gadget is jam-packed with all the security features you’ll find in a high-end camera at a fraction of the price.
Created by Wyze Labs in Seattle, WA, the Wyze Cam was conceived from the idea that high quality, easy-to-use smart home products shouldn’t break the bank. While similar smart home cameras may cost consumers upwards of $100 – $200, the Wyze Cam v2 is currently retailing at $20. Not only is the price modest, the Wyze Cam also boasts an impressive array of features on par with expensive competitors, including 14 days’ worth of rolling cloud storage at no extra charge.
Cam Features
The Wyze Cam v2 closely resembles the original, but with a few added features. The white cube sits atop a built-in adjustable stand outfitted with adhesive metal and magnetic plates so you can install the camera almost anywhere without additional hardware. The v2’s 110° wide-angle lens is powered by a CMOS sensor and captures images and video in 1080p full HD, providing users a crystal clear display on their smartphone or tablet.
Additionally, the Wyze Cam v2 comes equipped with night vision, motion detection, and even carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
The App
Using a phone or tablet with an internet connection, users can view their camera’s live stream and access playback modes. Additionally, the Wyze Cam automatically records videos in 10-15 second bursts whenever it detects motion and uploads them to the cloud. The Wyze app even lets users snap photos and record videos from their device. Continuous streaming requires inserting a microSD card, which retails for a little over $10. Considering Wyze provides 14-days’ worth of storage on the house, it may be a while before you actually need to purchase one.
The Wyze Cam is a remarkable piece of tech, to be sure. however, it’s not perfect. The v2 lacks panning and tilting capabilities (must be framed manually) and isn’t waterproof, so you’ll probably want to install somewhere it won’t be exposed to rain or snow. Personally, these seem like minor deficits compared with all the amazing things this cameracan do.
The Wyze Cam is the perfect tool for monitoring your house inside and out, so you can have peace of mind while you’re away. It’s also a great way to stay vigilant during the holidays and protect your Amazon packages from would-be bandits!
