I have some lingering neck stiffness from a car accident a few months ago so when I saw a pillow that was designed for neck pain, I jumped at the opportunity to get one. The Medi-Max therapeutic massage pillow is multi-functional in its approach to help people with insomnia, anxiety, stress, and neck pain.
10 Acupressure Points
Medi-Max’s massage feature isn’t a traditional massage pillow, it doesn’t vibrate or anything. It has something which no other pillow has and that’s 10 acupressure points, 6 that go at the base of the head and 4 for the upper trapezius muscles. These points are meant to simulate manual acupressure and call upon the wisdom of 5,000 years of Chinese medicine. According to traditional Chinese medicine, these specific points:
[it] feels like a reset button after a long day.
- eliminates insomnia
- reduces stress and tension
- relieves pain and stiffness
- reduces headaches
- relaxes tendons
- fights a sore throat and nosebleeds
- helps avoid sadness and fear
I definitely can’t speak to that last couple because it’s only been 3 weeks, I’m not prone to nose bleeds and I do tend to get scared from time to time. I will say that the ten points are firm and take some getting used to so you should. You have to position your body into perfect alignment and stay on for five to ten minutes. As the days progress you’ll learn to gradually relax and you won’t feel the need to move for a much longer period of time. Ten minutes of time on the acupressure points feels like a reset button after a long day.
Opposite the acupressure points are 10 magnets that increase the production of serotonin and melatonin by stimulating the pineal gland. I could not find any definitive research that proved this, though there are plenty of people out there who say they can feel a difference in anxiety and depression after undergoing magnotherapy. It also claims to heighten endorphin levels over time, all of these factors are to supposed to greatly reduce the chances of you getting a migraine.
Medi-Max’s other prominent features are the ventilation system, it has little holes in the center of it preventing it from heating up too much so you never have to flip it over. It’s comprised of two layers of high-quality memory foam, the outermost layer is firm and has a 37-degree angle opening which allows for perfect spinal alignment.
This pillow was a bit hard to get used to, mostly because of my preference for soft pillows that my head can sink into. But after using it for a few weeks, I can say that my neck stiffness has greatly subsided and it’s still too soon to tell if the other effects have taken hold or not. There is a spot on both ends of the pillow to accommodate people to sleep on their side which I tend to do, which is nice but again, it’s rather firm. Medi- Max isn’t a pillow you use to prop up and watch television on, it’s closer to a medical device to help feel better.
