UPDATE: Radius is known to contain the harmful neurotoxin, metofluthrin. The Department of Pesticide Regulation gives the chemical “a high priority for risk assessment.”
Few things are more cathartic than shedding the trappings of everyday life and stepping out into the natural world—it’s good for the humors! But few things can spoil your outdoor excursions quite like a swarm of hungry mosquitoes. And these bitey arthropods aren’t just bothersome—they’re deadly.
Mosquitoes are known carriers of nasty vector-borne diseases, such as malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, West Nile virus, Zika virus, and others.
Naturally, there are plenty of repellents on the market to combat the mosquito scourge, from sprays and lotions to mosquito nets. While these deterrents are effective they’re not without their shortcomings; nets are stationary, and sprays and lotions reek of chemicals and leave skin feeling oily.
Thermacell, a company who specializes in insect-repellent products, recognized the growing demand for alternative ways to keep winged-pests at bay—which lead them to develop a more tech-savvy deterrent: Radius zone repellent. And while it’s not their first zone repellent product, it’s certainly their most advanced.
According to Radius product lead, Kyle Adelman, “Our company…is the leader in the design and development of Zone Mosquito Protection. We’ve sold butane-powered versions of Thermacell for over a decade, and have earned a loyal following among outdoor enthusiasts.”
But unlike its predecessors which rely on butane for power, Radius uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (which is good news for travelers, as Radius is airplane friendly).
“Radius uses an EPA-approved active ingredient,” explains Adelman, “that is based on the naturally-occurring repellent that is found in the chrysanthemum flower.” The repellent is activated and dispersed by an internal heating element, powered by the lithium-ion battery.
Once fully activated (after about 10-15 minutes), the Radius will maintain a protective area of approximately 110 square feet. And, according to Thermacell, their product is 96% effective at repelling mosquitoes, but won’t harm humans or pets!
