Today marks the one year anniversary of my friend’s wedding, he met the love of his life and I couldn’t be happier for him. They met a few years ago on a dating app, and the reason I’m telling you this is because chances are they never would have met if Apple hadn’t of released the original iPhone 10 years ago. The release of the first smartphone ushered in a new age of communication and information that changed the world as we know it.
Yesterday, Apple introduced to the newest member of its family, the iPhone X. Clearly this is a special release for Apple, the “X” is pronounced “ten” like the Roman numeral. It also pays homage to the original by having an image of earth as the default wallpaper and is meant to commemorate 10 years of technological innovation. It will be interesting to see how Apple handles the release of their next phone, are they just skipping iPhone 9?
Many of the leaks we posted about last month turned out to be true. The iPhone X, along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have an edge-to-edge display. They’ve completely done away with the bezel, yet there is 5.8 inches of OLED display. The glassback does make it look like large iPhone 4, but the decision was made purposefully to support Apple’s wireless charging technology.
Touch ID and the home button are gone. The newest generation of iPhones will unlock via Face ID. All that’s required is an angle for the sensors to map an image of your face and yours eyes to be open. Hats, haircuts, beards, and lighting should not be problem when unlocking the phone, but finding the right angle might be.
The iPhone X will have 12-megapixel sensors with dual lense f1.8 and f2.4 apertures. It has a powerful A11 Bionic chip processor which allows video to be captured at 60 FPS in low light mode, and frame rate that supports 4K capture. Slow motion video at 1080p can viewed at 240 FPS. This is without a doubt, going to be the smartphone with the best camera in the market.
Augmented reality will be available on all iPhones soon enough with iOS 11 update, but this upcoming cohort will be able to do it best, given all the upgrades under the hood. You will be able to animate an emoji using your face, and yes, this includes the poop emoji.
The iPhone X is available for pre-order October 27th and will be for sale November 3, 2017. The 64GB model will cost a whopping $999, 256 GB will be $1,149. A pretty penny indeed, but it’s been working for Apple thus far.
